Abstract
When surgical schedules back-up, patients across continuum are affected. Rarely are these backlogs a result of lack of effort or commitment on part of staff. Working harder doesn't solve problem. According to Institute of Healthcare Improvements (IHI), the answer to improving patient flow lies in redesigning overall, system-wide processes. It is only then that right patient can be situated in right place with right provided at right time. This presentation will demonstrate how one cardiovascular surgical program embraced IHI's challenge to (1) evaluate flow, (2) measure and understand its variation, and (3) test changes to improve patient flow. It will show how simple changes throughout each phase of patient journey can result in improved patient outcomes and hospital efficiencies. The role of nursing throughout this quality initiative is paramount. This presentation will explore impact of proposed change on nursing care and how, through rapid improvement cycles, nursing was able to adapt and modify practice as required.
