Abstract
James C. Reed, MD, is a well-known author who recently released the 7th edition of his book on chest radiographs. Although chest radiographs are one of the most frequently performed imaging tests, interpretation still remains a complex challenge for health care providers. In this latest edition, the publisher has identified substantial updates on the topics of pulmonary nodules and carcinoid tumors, with new content on diffuse pulmonary disease. There are 150 illustrated case studies.Reed has developed a well-established, concise framework in which he organizes common pulmonary pathology into 23 main patterns. Each pattern chapter has 6 definitive parts:•A set of 2 to 4 questions on the chapter’s case studies and a set of true or false questions about general chapter concepts, which encourage readers to assess their knowledge on the specific chapter information•A detailed chart of possible differential diagnoses•A well-written and thorough discussion on the established criteria of the radiographic pattern and how relevant disease pathology can be identified using these criteria (this includes incorporating computed tomographic imaging to assist in radiographic interpretations)•A concise list of the pattern’s top 5 diagnoses•A chapter summary•An answer guide to the earlier chapter questions This book is written for radiologists and medical providers who have fundamental chest radiograph and pulmonary disease pathology knowledge. To nurse practitioners experienced in reading chest radiographs, the book provides an organized and interesting pattern identification approach to chest disease. The chapter format engages readers with medical case studies and challenging questions. The discussions provide detailed information on common diseases but in the unique framework of pulmonary patterns. The chapter content challenges readers to consider a complex list of differential diagnoses and then narrow the list to the most likely diagnoses, with recommendations for further diagnostic workup. The author emphasizes that the clinical information must be correlated with the radiographic findings to reach the appropriate final diagnosis. As an experienced radiologist, Reed provides a unique view of his observations of the evolving world of imaging technology. Despite technical advances, chest radiographs often remain the first imaging test done in clinical practice. The information in this book will enhance the experienced provider’s understanding of pulmonary disease and chest radiographs. Dr. Sabrina Jarvis has been a nurse for over 42 years and an acute care and family nurse practitioner for over 28 years. In 1990, she graduated valedictorian from Brigham Young University's nurse practitioner program and was one of the first adult critical care nurse practitioners in the country. In 2010, Dr. Jarvis received her DNP degree from the University of Utah. In 2011, Dr. Jarvis was inducted as a Fellow in the American Academy of Nurse Practitioners. She is the 2011 recipient of the Sigma Theta Tau Excellence in Clinical Practice Award, 2007 recipient of the “Utah Nurse Practitioner Award for Clinical Excellence”, and the 2006 recipient of the “Utah Nurse Practitioner Award for Excellence in Education.” She is currently employed as a full-time Associate Teaching Professor at Brigham Young University and part-time as a hospitalist. She nationally lectures on radiology, critical care, and adult nurse practitioner topics.
