We bring you the latest on tattoo removal (page 717), some news from Somalia that didn't get into the papers (page 739), the usual holiday hazards such as bicycle injuries (page 783) and melanoma (page 809), what may happen to you if your holiday accident occurs outside Australia (page 805), some really horrible tales (page 755 et seq.), some of the things that doctors get up to in their spare time (page 802), reflections on dying (page 792 et seq.), and our tributes to some great doctors who died this year. We wish you happy holidays and good reading. During 1993 we have been supported and assisted by an Editorial Advisory Panel representing all States and many disciplines, and by hundreds of referees who give their time and scholarship freely. Professor Geoffrey Berry continues to shoulder the responsibility for overseeing all the statistical reviewing — a monumental task. Our Guest Editors and authors Graham Brown, Nicholas Christophidis, Ken Cox, David Danks, Tom Mandel, Brian Mulhall, Julia Potter and Graeme Stewart have given us several excellent didactic series. To all these people, without whom we could not function, we say a heartfelt "thank you", acknowledging the debt owed them by us, our readers and Australian medicine. With the hope of peace in the Middle East to cheer us, and the appalling tragedies of Bosnia, Angola and the Indian earthquake to sober us, it is appropriate that we take time to examine our goals, the motivations that drive us, and the reasons for our "busyness" in this privileged country. No longer an outpost of Empire, no longer a European backwater, no longer an isolationist white Australia, our country has a pivotal role in the affairs of our region. With our multiculturalism and our material wealth we have much to contribute, in medicine as in other fields. The world needs the Christmas message of peace and goodwill as never before. Whatever your source of spiritual nourishment, we invite you to join us at this special season in resolving to make the message a reality.
