<h4>Novice to Expert Advanced Practice Nurse Role Transition: Guided Student Self-Reflection</h4> <p>Students pursuing an expanded role as advanced practice nurses (APNs) often experience a lack of self-confidence and hesitation when faced with increased responsibility and accountability for patients’ health (Hickey, Ouimette, & Venegoni, 1996). Methods to encourage positive role development and allow students time to evaluate their self-efficacy, feelings, and current competencies are necessary components for APN professional socialization. Reflection is a strategy to assist in self-development (Miller & Malcolm, 1990). A reflection tool was developed to help students identify their competencies, professional self-efficacy and feelings, and future educational needs critical to the development of their new APN role.
