Abstract

Abstract The objective of this study was to identify the perceptions of novice home visitors of their initial home visits to families in the community. Thirty‐four senior‐level public health nursing students completed a 16‐item questionnaire on previsit expectations and postvisit evaluations. Content analysis revealed that most students were anxious about making their first visit and felt insecure in the home visitor role. In general, they perceived the visit as successful if therapeutic rapport was established with a family. Social learning theory was used to explain students' teaching/learning needs related to the sequential nature of mastering the home visitor role. The results suggest that novice home visitors would benefit from structured preparation strategies derived from social learning theory.
