Abstract

The crystal structure of a novel CePd12Ge2 intermetallic was determined and refined from single-crystal X-ray diffraction data. The compound crystallizes in a tetragonal structure of a new type: space group I41md (No. 109), cell parameters a = b = 12.0819(9) Å, c = 6.4554(7) Å, V = 942.3(2) Å3, Z = 4. In a crystallographic unit cell, Ce atoms occupy one Wyckoff site (4a). Two (16c) sites and two (8b) sites are filled with Pd atoms. One more position (8b) is occupied by Ge atoms. An analysis of the features of the crystal structure revealed its relationship with the known binary type BaCd11. Magnetic and transport properties of CePd12Ge2 were studied. The results obtained show no signs of long-range magnetic ordering down to 1.7 K. However some hints on magnetic ordering below T ≈ 1.7 K may be proposed from magnetoresistance data. We also register low temperature logarithmic rise of resistivity indicating the main role of Kondo interactions in CePd12Ge2.
