Abstract

In this paper we present a novel method of creating and using geometric asymmetries for AC electroosmotic pumping. The method relies on grouping similar electrodes together in terms of applied voltage, in order to create configurable asymmetries in periodic electrode arrays, which induce a net pumping AC electroosmotic velocity. Using a numerical model for a system designed by applying the described method, it is demonstrated that by varying the degree of asymmetry it is possible to control the direction of the pumping velocity at a given voltage by simple switching of the voltages on the electrodes.
