Abstract
A multi-pulse excitation model has been shown to produce very good quality speech at bit rates of 9.6 to 13 kbit/s. This model is seldom used in bit rates below 8 kbit/s because it requires many bits to quantize the pulse positions and amplitudes. The authors present several efficient quantization schemes to reduce the bit rate of a multi-pulse excitation coder. Subjective listening tests show that the speech quality of the 5 kbit/s multipulse coder is sufficient for communication. >
