Abstract
A brief review of different types of permanent magnet materials is given, followed by a simplified description of the basic properties of the rare earth compounds. This description comprises crystal structure, magnetization, magnetic structure and magnetic anisotropy. After comparing the intrinsic magnetic properties of several novel ternary 3d rich rare earth compounds this paper concludes with a brief evaluation of technical and commercial aspects of novel permament magnet materials.
