Abstract

This paper aims to apply the Partitioned Stator (PS) Switched Flux Permanent Magnet (SFPM) machines topology to direct drive wind generator applications. A novel partitioned stator machine with salient inner stator is applied. The performance of the applied design is compared with a PS SFPM machine with cylindrical inner stator and an Outer Rotor (OR) SFPM machine. The analytical design of the PS and the OR SFPM machines is briefly presented. 2D finite element models were applied to study and compare the electromagnetic performance of three globally optimized machine designs having the same size. Based on finite element results, the PS machines exhibit higher efficiency and higher torque density compared to the OR SFPM machine. In addition, the novel salient inner stator PS machine provides the same electromagnetic performance of the cylindrical inner stator PS machine with 37.5% reduction of the inner stator core material.
