Abstract

A newly-developed odor recording system with capability of recording a wide range of smells is proposed. The system can reproduce the target odor as well as can record its recipe. The system is developed utilizing an automatic sampler as an odor blender so that up to 96 odor components in the liquid phase could be used. In addition to hardware improvement, linear discriminant analysis (LDA) instead of conventional principal component analysis (PCA) is proposed for determining the axes used in odor estimation algorithm based on 2-level quantization. In order to investigate the capability of this novel odor recorder, three flavors with different impressions of smell such as apple, banana and orange are recorded based on the same set of nine odor components, followed by the sensory test for reproduced odors. It was found that this system could record different odors properly and could reproduce the same impressions of smell as those of the target ones. This system is likely to be the first odor recorder model with the capability of recording a wide range of smells.
