Abstract

This review is focused on a novel family of multi-responsive polymer materials with the participation of ionic liquids (ILs-MRPMs). Substituting part or all the responsive elements in conventional multi-responsive polymer materials (MRPMs) with ionic liquids (ILs) by doping, grafting, and polymerization can render the polymer with significant advantages inheriting the properties of ion pairs. This approach may endow MRPMs with different responsive features, establishing a new route to building MRPMs with “ionic blocks”. Most recent studies related to the ILs-MRPMs are classified with their advantages and properties in this review. This review provides a basis to develop state-of-art MRPMs with more comprehensive and practical applications in the future.
