Abstract

In this paper, a novel miniaturized ultra-wide band (UWB) coplanar waveguide-fed (CPW) printed monopole antenna with stable radiation pattern is presented. Electromagnetic band-gap structures (EBG) are embedded underneath the bottom layer of the substrate in order to support slow-wave propagation, in which smaller effective wavelength compared to those in freespace and dielectric is achieved. The prospective antenna has a total size of 24 × 13 × 1.5 mm3 with more than 30% size reduction is obtained. A wide impedance bandwidth is achieved covering the band from 3.1GHz to more than 18 GHz with reflection coefficient superior to — 10 dB. Omnidirectional radiation pattern with stable radiation characteristics is acquired. Good agreement is achieved between simulated and measurement results.
