Abstract

A novel Mg 46Li 19Cu 25Y 10 nanostructure-bcc ductile phase composite containing a Mg 2Cu phase and amorphous zones has been obtained. The large plasticity (25%) under compression is due to the soft bcc Mg–Li solid solution phase and the large Mg 2Cu phase particles. A three stage serrated flow pattern is observed in the compressive stress–strain curve which is associated to the microcrack development.
