Abstract
Background: Left atrial (LA) systolic function contributes to the left ventricular (LV) function but its clinical usage has been limited. Previous method of assessing left atrial systolic force (LASF) did not include atrial A wave duration (A dur) and assumed non-regurgitant valves limiting its use in heart failure patients (HF pts). We used following formula to measure LASF. LASF (dyne) = 1.06 (gm/cm3) ∗ LA volume (cm3) ∗ [max A velocity (cm/sec) - Pre A velocity (cm/sec)} / A dur (sec)] LASF per atrial Volume (LASFperVol) = LASF / LA volume LASF assumes that LA force would increase the acceleration of mitral A inflow during LA systole.
