Abstract

In this paper, a novel low phase noise voltage-controlled oscillator (VCO) employing high-quality factor (Q) metamaterial transmission line (TL) based on the complementary spiral resonators (CSRs) is presented. The metamaterial TL having high-Q resonant characteristics is realized by using the array of the CSRs etched on the ground plane and center line on the signal plane. The resonance properties and inherent saturation of Q value by varying the width of the center line on the signal plane, dimensions of the CSRs, and current directions between the CSRs and increasing the number of the unit cell-pair of the CSRs are analyzed in this paper. The phase noise and tuning range of the proposed VCO are - 124.43 ~ -122.60 dBc/Hz at 100 kHz and 5.73 ~ 5.85 GHz.
