Abstract

A series of novel hybrid anodes consisting of high phosphorus pig iron and Zn with stoichiometry of xP-yZn (x = 1.5, 3.5, 8.0 wt%P and y = 10, 20, 30 wt%Zn) shows more negative potential below the protective potential of mild steel (– 0.778 V vs. saturated calomel electrode) in seawater, suggesting their effectiveness as sacrificial anodes. The anodic performance of the hybrid anodes is surprisingly comparable to the commercial Zn-anode with anode capacity and efficiency greater than 760 Ah/Kg and 80 %, respectively. The localized segregation of Zn and large cathode-to-anode area-ratio in the microstructure attribute to the active behavior of the hybrid anodes.
