Abstract

We consider porous media in which electrical transport is associated with a pore fluid of conductivity σ f, and a constant excess surface conductivity. The non-linear relation between the effective conductivity and σ f is shown to depend on the degree of surface roughness. This analysis provides an explanation for the puzzling fact that often not all of the surface charge (as determined by chemical titration) contributes to electrolytic conduction.
