Abstract

New expanded graphite (EG) sample is synthesised by using novel methods. Scanning electron microscopy images of the EG samples are significantly different from traditional EGs which has worm-like morphology and web-like microstructure. The new EG does not exhibit such morphology and has almost no web-like microstructure. The ‘pores’ in the new EG sample result from the intervals formed from folds, bends, and squeezing of graphite flakes, which is similar to the gradual and free expansion of compact spitballs. Based on this, the new EG should be called ‘spitball’ EG, i.e. SEG.
