Abstract

Surface-coating technologies now play a vital role in many manufacturing processes and in finished product protection. Currently, two of the most widespread applications of surface coatings are wear resistance and corrosion protection. Of the many coating technologies, unbalanced magnetron sputtering is arguably the most versatile for low-temperature deposition of thin-film coatings. By using the ‘closed field’ deposition technique, high quality, fully dense coatings can be uniformly deposited onto a wide range of engineering components. Unbalanced magnetron sputtering is also an excellent research tool which has been used to deposit a number of materials, which are themselves novel or have novel properties. The high density and excellent adhesion makes it ideally suited for use in harsh engineering environments.
