Abstract

A new diploid number (2n = 30, NF = 52), chromosomal formula (22 biarmed and eight uniarmed chromosomes), C‐banding pattern, and number and distribution of NORs (long arm of pair 4, submetacentric) are described for a member of the frog genus Alsodes (A. aff. valdiviensis) from southern Chile. The C‐banding pattern and the number and distribution of NORs (long arm of pair 4, submetacentric) of A. barrioi are also described for the first time. These karyotypic characteristics are compared with those of other Alsodes species and members of the Eupsophus roseus group of species. The karyotypic evolution of the genus Alsodes is discussed.
