Abstract

Three new dicyanomethylene cored aggregation induced emission luminogens with donor-π-acceptor-donor structures were designed and synthesized as 1O2 photosensitizers. All three luminogens exhibited broad absorption spectra, bright near-infrared fluorescence and small energy gap between S1 and T1 to sensitize oxygen. After being encapsulated into nano-micelles, TPA2CN showed higher 1O2 generation efficiency and photoluminescence quantum yield among the three photosensitizers. Bio-micelles of TPA2CN were prepared and showed comparable 1O2 generation capability to commercial photosensitizer chlorin e6 in solution. With negligible dark cytotoxicity of the bio-micelles, efficient reactive oxygen species generation was also observed in live cultured cells and effective cancer cell ablation was proved in vivo.
