Abstract

Abstract The polymeric ligand poly(respropiophenone diylethylene)s forms 1:2 metal: ligand comlexes with Cu(II), Ni(II), Co(II), Mn(II) and Zn(II). All the polychelates are reddish brown colored and insoluble in common organic solvents. Their structures have been elucidated on the basis of magnetic, electronic, and IR spectroscopy. Electronic spectra in conjuction with magnetic moments are in accord with an octahedral environment around the central metal ion in all polymeric chelates except Cu(II) and Zn(II) chelates, which have been shown to possess square planar and tetrahedral geometry, respectively. IR data show that the polymeric ligand behaves as bidentate and bonding through the phenolic O-H and oxygens of the C=O groups. All the chelates are paramagnetic except Zn(II), which is found to be diamagnetic. A study of thermal propertis of the polymers has also been carried out. Referee I: J. P. Tandon Referee II: M.
