Abstract

1. 1. The sponge Halichondria panicea has a complete sequence of glycolytic and tricarboxylic acid cycle enzymes. 2. 2. However, there is no detectable lactate dehydrogenase in H. panicea and lactate dehydrogenase appears to be functionally replaced by an enzyme which catalyses the reductive condensation of pyruvate and glycine to yield 2-methylimino-diacetic acid (strombine). 3. 3. The intracellular distribution and kinetic properties of this novel enzyme (strombine dehydrogenase) have been investigated and its role in metabolism is discussed.
