Abstract

Lithium hydroxide as a novel activator for synthesis of fly ash based geopolymer was reported. The effects of LiOH concentration on the mechanical properties, morphology and mineral structure were investigated by X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy, thermogravimetric analysis/differential thermogravimetric analysis and 29Si magic angle spinning–nuclear magnetic resonance (MAS-NMR) spectra. The results showed that the optimum concentration of LiOH was 4 mol L−1, corresponding to the compressive strength of 8·29 MPa at curing age of 28 days after 85°C heating for 9 h. The mineral phase of spodumene (LiAlSi2O6) was formed from the results of XRD. The 29Si MAS-NMR spectra indicated that the network structure of fly ash based geopolymer was built by the replacement of one SiO4 with one AlO4 at a given site, causing a low field shift of ∼10 ppm.
