Abstract

Abstract Geologic reconnaissance has permitted the identification of Infracambrian, Cambrian, Ordovician, Gotlandian (Silurian), and Devonian formations in the Paleozoic rocks outcropping in the northern part of the Fouta-Djalon massif (Guinea and Senegal). The Infracambrian rests with a major unconformity on a tilted basement and is characterized by the occurrence of stromatolite- and oncolite-bearing beds at its base. The base of the Cambrian is marked by a tillite. The fossiliferous Devonian and Gotlandian deposits have been known for a long time. The results of the reconnaissance show that substantial changes are necessary in the geologic map of the region, particularly elimination of the Falemian.
