Abstract
Peculiar ganoid scales (thick, globulous, without articular process, with a smooth or an indented upper surface), from the Maastrichtian of the El Molino Formation (Central Bolivia), are considered as belonging to a new Holostean Semionotidae: Lepidotyle enigmatica gen. and sp. nov. The presence of an important remodelling of ganoine in most of these scales allows us to hypothesize physiological modification in relation to calcium, which can be related either to reproduction (with migration from a thalassoid to a freshwater environment), or to an imput of fresh water from the continent. Lepidotyle is considered to be a margino-littoral taxon, and confirms the presence, already demonstrated, of a Maastrichtian sea in Central Bolivia.
