Abstract

The two distinctive species herein treated exemplify the disjunct distribution of fishes in local areas within the Rio Grande complex. They are members of the Notropis lutrensis group (subgenus Cyprinella), which is notably characterized by such discrete distributions. N. panarcys occupies the Rio Conchos basin and N. proserpinus (Girard), seemingly its closest relative, occupies three adjacent tributaries of Rio Grande in Texas, Pecos and Devils rivers and Las Moras Creek, and one stream, Rio San Carlos, on the Mexican side.
