Abstract
A new species of Notropis (subgenus Cyprinella) is described from a single spring in the Guzman Basin of northwestern Mexico. It differs from N. formosus and other members of the N. lutrensis-complex in body size and conformation, color, pigmentation, nuptial tubercles, but most notably in its long jaws which extend under the orbit. In addition, the taxonomic status of populations of N. formosus is examined, with the conclusion that it is a highly variable species. Subdivision of N. formosus into species or subspecies seems unjustified.
