Abstract

In grid-tie and micro-grid applications, battery energy storage systems using single battery system is used. The direct current-alternating current converter interface is used in conventional battery energy storage system. Generally batteries with similar configuration are preferred in such system. This paper deals with hybrid second- life battery system with modular boost-multilevel buck converter which provides flexibility to the system. The advantage of using second life batteries reduces stress on grid , carbon footprint and energy costs. Different battery sources are cascaded using modular multilevel converters for energy production. Modular boost multilevel buck converter is preferred because of better utilization of switches, high converter efficiency, reduced cost of converter module and improved reliability. The modular boost-multilevel buck converter using second life batteries is analyzed and simulation results are presented.
