Abstract

It is well known that the immunity of the patients with malignant tumors decrease significantly. It is possible that the risk of virus infection in patients with cancer is much higher than that of the healthy population. In this study, we have analyzed the prevalence of parvovirus B19 (B19) infection in adult cancer patients. B19 viral DNA was examined by nested PCR from blood samples of the cancer patients (65 men and 48 women) with a mean age of 61.4±11.4 years old from September to November 2010. A group of 800 healthy blood donors served as the control group. The prevalence percentage of B19 infection in adult cancer patients was 46.0% compared to that in healthy blood donors were 4.5%. There were big differences between malignant tumors group and normal controls. The results showed B19 DNA commonly exists in cancer patients serum. Thus, the patients with cancer should avoid contact with people who are infected with B19 virus and the healthy population also should prevent themselves from infection of this virus from the patients with cancer.
