Abstract

To obtain the rapid anaerobic granulation in expanded granular sludge bed (EGSB) reactor seeded with digestion sludge for treatment of actual coking wastewater, the rapid granulation using brewery wastewater and the quickly acclimation using coking wastewater of the EGSB reactor seeded with municipal digestion sludge and little granules were studied in this paper. The results indicated that the EGSB reactor seeded with municipal digestion sludge and little loose granules lack of nutrition could startup within 10d using brewery wastewater. With the EGSB reactor configuration, the fast acclimation for treating coking wastewater containing many toxicant and refractory organic compounds could accomplish by the granules cultivating with brewery wastewater within 6 months. Gradually increasing the coking wastewater supplement ratio was an effective acclimation approach. With an unalterable influent COD concentration, the startup of the EGSB reactor treating coking wastewater could achieve within 6 months through acclimating the granules incubating by brewery wastewater with the methods of increasing the supplement ratio of coking wastewater. With the conditions of about 2200 mg-L-1 influent COD concentration, 1.2L-h-1 influent flow, 10h HRT, about 5.6 kgCOD-m-3-d-1 organic load, 10.0:1recycle ration, and 3.1m-h-1 Vup, the COD removal efficiency could attain to 56.2%. The inhibition effects of the coking wastewater on the methanogenesis were reversible and the methanogenic activity of the granules could resume along with the bacteria of different metabolic groups gradually adapting the coking wastewater.
