Abstract

“Nothing to see here: developmental frames and discontent in Chinese glacier tourism” is an exploration of placemaking, visuality, and tourist disappointment in the Sino-Tibetan borderlands that speaks to the contradiction between developmentalism and environmentalism in an age of observable climate change. The study is based on anthropological fieldwork conducted in Sichuan Province, China, between 2018 and 2021. This includes a seven-month period of 2019 volunteering as a tour guide at Hailuogou National Glacier Forest Park, as well as the tourism shutdown following the initial outbreak of COVID-19. This work provides new insights on China’s domestic tourism and heritage in conversation with the politics of place.
