Abstract

The disaster at the historical city archive of Cologne has led to an intensification of the discussion of facility preservation measures. Along with issues of long-term conservation, strategies for preservation of the original artifacts are more important than ever. Establishing emergency plans for institutions housing cultural memory is of central concern. This article is derived from a master's thesis titled »Emergency Planning in Libraries-state of the Art, Future Perspectives and Implementation based on the Example of Martin-Opitz Library, Herne« which was completed in August 2008 at the University of Applied Sciences Cologne, Faculty of Library and Information Science. The author summarizes the key results of the study and takes into consideration the latest events while focusing on the current practices of emergency planning.
