Abstract

Spanish-speaking high school students in the U.S. need to be exposed to ever-increasing school library and classroom collections of carefully selected books-in English and Spanish--to enrich their lives as individual human beings, to develop insights into and understanding of their own lives, to become aware of the greatness of their cultural heritage, and to develop an interest in reading as a leisure-time activity. As I have stated in my previous publications (Books in Spanish for Children and Young Adults: an Annotated Guide, Scarecrow Press, 1978; Series No. II, 1983; Series III, 1985), it is definitely an onerous task to select books in Spanish for adolescents that have a high potential for reader involvement or interest. In this bibliography, however, I have included a wide variety of recent books -fiction, biography, poetry, history, folklorepublished in Spain, Mexico, Costa Rica, Argentina, Chile and Colombia that should appeal to a diversity of adolescents' interests and backgrounds. (For the convenience of the selector, I have included a tentative grade level for each book discussed.)
