Abstract

Pelvic fin dimorphism was used as an external indicator of sex of northern hog suckers Hypentelium nigricans, shorthead redhorses Moxostoma macrolepidotum, longnose suckers Catostomus catostomus, and white suckers Catostomus commersoni. Sex of the four species ofcatostomids examined can be determined externally by two calculations: (1) linear regression of the seventh pelvic fin ray length on fork length, (2) ratio of the lengths of the seventh and third pelvic fin rays. Depending upon the species, these methods were correct 91–96% of the time. Both techniques were valid for immature and mature catostomids over a range of fork lengths from 103 to 561 mm.
