Abstract

Summary. Trapa natans L. is typified by a specimen from Italy and T. natans var. pumila Nakano ex Verdc. is validated. Treatments of the genus Trapa L. are widely diverse, varying from those that accept only a single species to those, mainly the product of the Russian School, where up to 30 recent species are maintained and many more fossil ones in addition. The literature is complex and preparation of accounts for the various local floras particularly difficult. During the preparation of an account for the Flora of Southern Africa it became clear that two taxa were involved there and a number of problems were encountered in attempting to provide names for them. After much thought and study of all the material at Kew the decision to follow Brenan (1953, 1978: 346) in considering that there was one species with many varieties was made. Most workers agree that only one species is involved and some would recognize no varieties but probably have not exam
