Abstract
Nearly half a century ago, Nishida Tatsuo observed an interesting fact in Tangut literature that sometimes a personal suffix might be attached to the principal verb of a Tangut sentence. Later, there was a pattern recognized in the Tangut personal suffixes. This chapter discusses the nature, origin and development of the Tangut personal suffixes in order to deepen the understanding of previous studies in this connection. It presents a list of illustrative sentences selected from the Tangut version of Records of Confucius on the Harmony Platform. If we believe that Tangut is approximately parallel to other Qiangic languages in their historical development, we may further conclude accordingly that the third person pronouns in the modern Qiangic languages are not ancient inheritances, but rather innovations of relatively modern times. Keywords:Nishida Tatsuo; predicative personal suffixes; Qiangic languages; Records of Confucius; Tangut language
