Abstract

as well as in many other invertebrates and vertebrates, it has been found that eserine sensitizes muscle tissue to acetyicholine by rendering inactive the cholinesterase present in the tissue, and perhaps because there exists a synergism between acetylcholine and eserine (Freud and Uyldert. 1936). Nicotine is known to act on ganglionic cells, thus blocking nerve impulses. In the vertebrates in small doses it leads to temporary stimu lation followed by depression, and in large doses depression is evident immediately.
