NOTES ON THE PAPERS ON PHILIPPINE DEER PUBLISHED BY HEUDE IN 1887 AND 1888

Abstract

In his papers on the deer of the Philippine Islands and Indo-China, Heude gave descriptions of a great number of new species, most of which seem to be of doubtful value (cf. Hollister, 1912 : 41^14; Taylor, 1934 : 509-513). The date of publication of the generic and specific names proposed in the first part of the second volume of the Memoires concernant l'Histoire naturelle de l'Empire Chinois is given by Hollister, Taylor and others as 1888, but this applies to some of the names only, as several of them were published already in 1887. The remarkable feature of this work is, that two first parts of the second volume were issued. One of these bears the following indication on the wrapper : T. II. premier cahier avec onze Planches ; it was issued at Zi-Ka-Wei in 1887. The other is announced as : T. II. Premier cahier avec 21 planches ; this one was issued in Chang-Hai in 1888. The fascicle published in 1887 contains a title-page, two pages of explanation of the plates, one page with a register to the names used with references to the plates, and plates I-XI. The title-page reads as follows : Problema Philippinense, j seu | Cervinorum Craniorum | in Philippinis insulis hucusque detectorum, [ quae ex amicis accepit [ atque in taxinomicam seriem composuit [ Petrus Heude, Soc. Jesu Presbyter, apud sinas missionarius, | Praeviae Icones, | nec non et eorundem craniorum parcus index. The fascicle issued in 1888 contains Heude's papers on the deer of the Philippines and Indo-China, on Bubalus mindorensis, and that on the Suidae, two pages explanation of plates (incl. of that of the plates published in 1887, and 10 plates (0, IA, XII-XIX). Together with the plates issued in 1887, these plates form the 21 mentioned on the wrapper. Heude (1888, p. 1 note) mentioned that he changed both the title of his paper and the explanation of the plates, and that the explanation, which had been published previously, should be regarded as suppressed. Notwithstanding this statement, the names published in 1887 are valid and date from that year. The following is an alphabetical list of the names published by Heude in 1887 :
