Abstract
Abstract Ivan Venianimov (1797-1879), a Russian missionary born in Siberia and educated in a seminary at Irkutsk, figures prominently in the Russian-American period. He arrived in Unalashka with his family in 1824 and immediately set to work learning about the Aleut language and culture, and developing plans to help the native people. He traveled widely in the Russian colony and as far south as California, writing several important works, the most influential of which was Notes on the Islands of the Unalashka District (St. Petersburg, 1840).
