Abstract

AbstractThe relationships between the Australian and other Old World species of Ligyra Newman are discussed. The Australian fauna is composed of an old endemic stock with a more recent immigrant addition. The genus is considered to be a true Gondwanan element. Hyperalonia Rondani is a South American genus distinct from Ligyra. Descriptions are provided, for the first time, of the male genitalia of L. bombyliiformis (Macleay), the type species, L. doryca (Boisduval) and L. satyrus (F.). L. contrasta Paramonov is a synonym of L. punctipennis (Macquart) and L. macraspis (Thomson) is confirmed as a synonym of L. sinuatifascia (Macquart). L. ochracea and L. cruciata spp. n. are described from New Guinea and L. leptyna sp. n. from the Solomon Islands.
