Abstract

AbstractA dormant nest of the red honey ant,Melophorus bagoti, was excavated in Alice Springs, Northern Territory, Australia in August 1987. The nest had 160 chambers, reached a depth of 1.75 m, and contained 2,849 workers and mobile repletes and a dealate queen. Aborigines are familiar with this honey ant, but do not normally eat its repletes.
