Abstract

Little is known of the sandfly fauna in Szechuan Province. Although Hou (1943) reported having found sandflies in the western part of this province, he failed to identify them. In 1943 a systematic survey of sandflies from the beginning of April to the end of October was carried out by the writers in the vicinity of Koloshan, Chungking. The insects began to appear in the latter part of April and disappeared early in October. During the period under survey, recumbent-haired sandflies totalling 875 in number were collected. Of them, 607 were identified to be Phlebotomus barraudi while the rest belong to a new species. The morphology of this new species is very characteristic and not identical with that of any of the known species recorded in literature. We propose, therefore, to name it Phlebotomus koloshanensis after the place where it was first found.
