Abstract

The validity of some races of Parus varius were re-examined based on the material preserved in the Yamashina Museum which includes large series of Momiyama collection.P. v. saisiuensis and P. v. koreensis synonymized under P. v. varius in the Hand-List, 1942, were considered as recognizable. The both are average larger in size (with thicker bill) than varius or ijimae. Compared with varivs their face and flanks are a little deeper in color, the back is purer and paler in koreensis, but olivaceous in saisiuensis as in ijimae. The four specimens from Nagoya, Aichi Prefectere, Honshu, were found to be as deep colored as in ijimae on the under surface and all of the four specimens had distinctly long bill. They may, therefore, form a small locall population of such characters. The diagnosis of the author's new race, sataensis. (Tori, no. 63), was also given.
