Abstract
THE west African Republic of Liberia has an area of approximately 43,000 square miles. It lies between 4? 22' to 8? 50' north latitude, and 7? 33' to 11? 32' longitude west of Greenwich, and has one of the most humid and rainiest climates of Africa. The typical vegetation of the coastal belt, however, is open grassland with patches of bracken fern (Pteridium acquilinum) and trees of the monkey plum (Parinarium macrophyllum). This belt is flat and characterized by creeks and tidal lagoons which are fringed with mangrove trees (Rhizophora mucronata). While stationed in Liberia (1943-1945) I had the opportunity to study the herpetology of various parts of the country. Notes on the species of snakes collected follow:
