Abstract
Although Weishu is a historical record, its linguistic data, such as variant characters, naming taboos and poetic passages, reveal a great deal of phonetic information. Through careful inspection and ranking of these data, this study summarizes and briefly analyzes all the phonetic phenomena in Weishu. We can roughly regard these phenomena as reflections of the phonetic features of Chinese in the Northern Dynasties. Compared to the historical records in the Southern Dynasties, we can see some important divergence between Northern and Southern pronunciation.
