Abstract

This paper uses Harrison's rational-pragmatic authority as a model to organize results of participant observation of two Southern Baptist Churches. The findings contradict notions that pastors in congregationally-organized churches are unable to control church policy and a number of mechanisms contributing to pastoral power are delineated. Finally, the resistance of these pastors to formal organization is explored and related to the church-sect typology.
