Abstract

1. Elaeocarpus firmus Knuth in Feddes Rep. 48: 75 (1940); A. C. Smith in Journ. Arn. Arb. 25: 270 (1944); Coode in Brunonia 1: 244 (1978). Type: Northeast New Guinea [Morobe Distr.], Ogeramnang, 1700 m, 1937, Clemens 5405 (holotype--or isotype ?-B n.y.; isotypes A n.y., K). This is a scrappy collection, sterile at K; Smith stated that the duplicate in A was 'not in condition to place'. With the benefit of recent collections it is now possible to relate this to Schodde & Craven 5019, currently uneasily placed with E. leucanthus A. C. Sm. (Coode (1978) p. 178). It seems therefore that E. firmus may well be a distinct species differing from E. leucanthus in the shorter petioles, and leaves with less prominent fine venation and generally less hairy beneath. More fertile collections are needed-even though this area of 'Group III' seems to become more confusing with addition of specimens.
