Abstract

Abstract Plantago obconica is described as a new species related to P. triandra but differing significantly in the large conspicuous funnelform capsule. It grows in alpine bogs in Marlborough and Canterbury, sometimes in a similar habitat to the inland P. triandra subsp. triandra. Coastal populations of P. triandra are distinguished as subsp. masoniae. The very local eastern North Island P. picta is reduced to a subspecies of the much more widespread P. spathulata, which occurs from Hawkes Bay southwards to Central Otago.
